On October 30th, our tables and chairs in the EdTech Commons (C-559) overflowed with faculty members debating the question, “Should students be allowed to use their phones and tablets in their classrooms?” Responses depended on what students were doing with the devices. Some faculty members recounted stories of students using their devices to augment their learning experiences—to follow along with the e-version of their textbooks, look up definitions and formulas, or even take pictures and videos of slides and lectures. In other cases, perhaps depending on the discipline, devices were a distraction. Regardless of past experience, nearly everyone was interested in learning ways to intentionally leverage mobile technology using apps like NearPod or Socrative.
